- A young boy lying on a mat on the floor is being examined by a physician; vine leaves covering cauterization scars on his chest are testament to the treatment by quack physicians. Verso: WHO/10041. Palestine - Refuges. 57 camps in 4 countries. The 1,200,000 refuges of Palestine are scattred over some 250,000 square kilometers an area larger than that of Great Britain. In December 1949, in order to help them, the General Assembly of the United Nations set up UNRWA, which stands for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refuges in the Near-East. The General Assembly also requested the World health Organization , the Food and Agriculture Organizations, the UN children's Fund and toher agencies to provide supplies, staff and urgently needed services without delay. Infant death rate was appaling at first. It is still high despite constant impovements in child care and the work carried out by the UNRWA cantres for mother and child health. Our photo shows a little boy treated for Banti's dieseases of Arab quacks who cauterised his body and covered the scars with vine leaves.
