In a special issue World Health sets out to show how the world's second leading cause of death is being fought. In its fight against cancer, the USSR concentrates on mass examination, treatment and research. All men over 35 and all women over 30 have to be examined at least once a year. Twenty million people in the USSR were examined in 1963 and the mass campaign, begun in 1948, is being intensified in 1964. Professor A.N. Novikov, Director of the Herzan Institute in Moscow, is one of the experts of the World Health Organization.He was Chairman of the last WHO Epert Committee on the Pervention of Cancer.
