There are few more significant pointers to progress in health care than the growth in importance of the hospital. Once it was little more than a place for the poor and the incurably sick to die in, but medical, scientific and technical advance coupled with far-reaching social and economic change and growth, brought anout a transformation. Hospitals became strongholds, isolated foretresses against illness and diseases. Now this is giving place to a new concept: the hospital is emerging from isolation, reaffirming its link with the community, and developing into a centre for an arrau of therapeutic, preventitive, rehabilitative ans educational medical services. The large regional hospitals employ modern, expansive equipment which is beyond the financial means of smaller hospitals (France) - Hospital Necker, Paris.
