Image caption on page 21 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "Before assignment to the Surgeon General's Office in Washington, Assistant Surgeon John Shaw Billings (1838-1913) put his medical skills to work in the field with the Army of the Potomac at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Throughout the war, he was also stationed intermittently at military hospitals in Philadelphia and New York City. This is a photograph of Billings, ca. 1863."
