Black and white photograph portrait of John Shaw Billings, head and shoulders, face to the right. Image caption on page 27 of the book US National Library of Medicine: "While he concentrated on building and indexing the Army Medical Library, John Shaw Billings attended to additional duties both mandatory and elective. During the 1870s, he oversaw the Medical Department's equipment and supply expenditures through its Disbursing Division. He also served on boards reviewing medical candidates and medical devices, and he edited publications issued by the Surgeon General's Office. Additionally, he consulted with The Johns Hopkins University on the construction of their hospital, based on his own design of the institution, and from 1879 to 1882, Billings was vice president of the National Board of Health, a Congressional agency created to prevent the spread of yellow fever and any other likely epidemics in the United States. This photograph dates from the 1890s."
